How to Convert HEIC to JPG Online for Free

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones since iOS 11. While HEIC produces smaller files than JPG at the same quality, the format creates a major compatibility problem: Windows Photo Viewer, most Android devices, older software, and the majority of websites cannot open HEIC files without additional software or plugins.

1

Upload your HEIC files

Drop one or multiple .heic or .heif files. Batch conversion is fully supported.

2

Conversion happens instantly

Each HEIC file is decoded and converted to JPEG using browser APIs. No server involved.

3

Download your JPG files

Single files download directly. Multiple files package into a ZIP archive.

Why can't I open HEIC files on Windows?

Windows 10 and Windows 11 do not include native HEIC support by default. Microsoft offers a paid HEIC extension in the Microsoft Store, but it costs money and requires installation. Many users search for "heic to jpg converter free" or "heic to jpg online" specifically because they want to avoid paying or installing anything. ImageZen4u converts HEIC files entirely in your browser — no installation, no payment, no upload.

HEIC to JPG on Windows 10 and Windows 11

The easiest method on Windows is to use a browser-based converter like ImageZen4u. Open imagezen4u.com in Chrome or Edge, drop your HEIC files, and download the converted JPGs. This works on any Windows version without any software installation. The alternative — installing the HEIC codec from the Microsoft Store — costs approximately €0.99 and only works with the Photos app, not with all software.

HEIC to JPG on Mac

Macs natively support HEIC files since macOS High Sierra. However, you may still need to convert for sharing with Windows users, uploading to websites, or editing in software that doesn't support HEIC. On Mac, you can convert using Preview (File → Export → JPEG) or use ImageZen4u for batch conversion of multiple files at once.

Does converting HEIC to JPG reduce quality?

Slightly. HEIC uses more efficient compression than JPEG, so converting to JPG at the same apparent quality produces a slightly larger file. ImageZen4u exports JPG at 92% quality which is visually indistinguishable from the original for normal viewing. The practical difference is imperceptible on screen or in standard prints.

What is the difference between HEIC and HEIF?

HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) is the container format standard. HEIC is Apple's implementation of HEIF. They are essentially the same format — files with .heic and .heif extensions can both be converted using this tool.

Yes. Drop as many HEIC files as you need. All convert simultaneously and download as a ZIP archive with your original filenames.
No. All conversion happens locally in your browser. Your photos — including any GPS data or personal metadata embedded in them — never leave your device.
HEIC supports HDR (High Dynamic Range) colours that standard JPG cannot display. Very vivid colours may appear slightly different in JPG because the colour space is clipped to standard sRGB. For most photos this difference is not visible.
Yes. Both .heic and .heif files are supported. They use the same underlying format.
Go to Settings → Camera → Formats and select "Most Compatible". This saves new photos as JPG instead of HEIC. Note: this uses more storage space.

Why iPhone photos use HEIC

Apple switched iPhones to the HEIC format because it stores photos at roughly half the file size of JPEG while keeping the same visual quality. This saves enormous storage space on your phone. The downside is compatibility: HEIC is far newer than JPEG, so many Windows computers, older Android phones, websites, and applications simply cannot open it. That is why an iPhone photo often refuses to display or upload on other devices.

The compatibility problem in practice

You email a photo from your iPhone to a colleague on a Windows PC and they cannot open it. You try to upload a picture to a job application form and it rejects the HEIC file. You send a photo to a friend with an older Android phone and it arrives as an unviewable file. Converting HEIC to JPG solves all of these instantly, because JPG is understood by essentially every device and service ever made.

Keeping quality while converting

At a high quality setting, the JPG you get from a HEIC file is visually indistinguishable from the original. PDFZen4u lets you choose the output quality so you can balance file size against detail. For photos you intend to print or edit further, use the highest quality. For photos destined for email or the web, a slightly lower setting produces a smaller file that still looks excellent.

Converting many photos at once

People rarely need to convert just one photo. After a holiday or an event, you might have dozens of HEIC images to share with someone who cannot open them. PDFZen4u converts batches of HEIC files together and packages the results as a single download, turning what could be a tedious one-by-one chore into a single operation.

Stopping HEIC at the source

If you would rather your iPhone simply took JPG photos from the start, open Settings, tap Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. Your phone will then capture in JPG. For every HEIC photo you already have, though, a quick browser conversion is the fastest fix — and because PDFZen4u converts locally, your personal photos are never uploaded anywhere during the process.
